THE MOST AMAZING MUSIC, HERE REISSUED WITH LOVE AND RESPECT FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER -- TRUE DETROIT SOUNDS! FROM SERMONS TO TOPICAL NUMBERS TO GORGEOUS SLOW MOANERS. THIS IS THE MOST BURNING AND FIERY AND SUBLIME MUSIC YOU (PROBABLY) NEVER HEARD BEFORE.
We're pressing about 600 copies of each title; these will be available later for individual sale at stores and direct from us. 270 subscription copies will be made available.
EACH SUBSCRIBER EDITION IS NUMBERED AND FANCIER THAN THE RETAIL COPIES. ESP Detroit lovingly hand silkscreened the first three titles, while the LPs in the second set will be wraparound fake Folkways style paste-ons printed in collaboration with the DETROIT WOOD TYPE COMPANY of Hamtramck.
Vinyl, covers, mastering -- all done in Detroit.
DGRP 01: JOHNSON FAMILY SINGERS 'Don't Let the Devil Ride' -- Extremely rare 1970s killer kid-funk gospel from this Saginaw-based family band. Remastered from original master tapes. Extensive liner note booklet inside. Mind-blowingly good. (NOTE: A very limited run of these have been pressed up by Third Man for their opening day event; this is the same record with a different color scheme. All proceeds went to the DGRP.)
DGRP 02: 'THE GOSPEL SOUL OF DETROIT: Sacred Sounds from the Motor City' -- Expertly compiled by musician and gospel historian Michael Hurtt, this overview of Detroit gospel from 7"s is years in the making, and well worth the wait. Cumberland River Singers, the Trumpelettes, Jericho Travelers, Rev Drayton, and more. Stellar from start to finish.
DGRP 03: REV. JODIE HOLMES 'When I Could I Wouldn’t & Now I Want to But I Can’t' : A perfect sermon recorded live with a congregation becomes something else when the band kicks in a third of the way through. They vamp their way through a dozen classic spirituals and gospel songs, behind Rev. Holmes, who recorded three LPs for Natural. "Sounds like a Velvet Underground bootleg, but it's happy!," says Sam Hooker (Peoples Records/ Tarpit).
DGRP 04: SILVER HARPS 'Pressing On: Live at the First Congregational Church of Detroit, 2013' From a Michael Hurtt-directed live showcase of the best active classic gospel acts, this unique recording captures a largely a capella singing group (it's largely voice + percussion) and is phenomenal.
DGRP 05: THE SACRED SOUNDS of SACRED SOUNDS: Detroit Gospel on an Independent Label, 1960s & 1970s -- That's not the final title, but it is the content of this funky, fun, and essential compilation curated by gospel expert Adam Stanfel. So good it hurts.
DGRP 06: PURE HEART TRAVELERS 'Call the Angels' Essential and absolutely funky gospel soul reissue, with extensive liner notes inside. Truly beautiful and compellingly original music.
DGRP 07 -- SUBSCRIBER-ONLY EXCLUSIVE RED VINYL 7": RUBYE SHELTON/ MOTHER ESTELLA BOYD : Two sides of Pentecostal stomps
* Trinosophes in Eastern Market has offered to be a local pick-up spot for the records, which will be issued in two batches.
NOTE: The Harps and the Travelers continue to perform today in the Detroit area; both of them will celebrate major anniversaries this year. In addition, Rev. Holmes is an active preacher at the age of 84, and Pastor Johnson -- leader of the original Johnson Spiritual Singers -- continues to sing and preach and play the guitar. So, we hope to produce a concert with some combination of all these artists in the summer of 2017, to celebrate finishing the series.
THE DETROIT GOSPEL REISSUE PROJECT was initiated by Mike McGonigal (Yeti, Metro Times, Social Music, Mississippi, Tompkins Square, Chemical Imbalance) with great assistance from Michael Hurtt and Adam Stanfel. The project is possible in part thanks to a matching arts grant from the Knight Foundation.
